Ordnance Survey launch a collection of case studies with Sigma Seven

“It is clear that Sigma Seven’s mobile solutions can really transport Ordnance Survey data out of the office and into many field-based applications. This means more business processes can benefit from the power of having precise location data delivered where and when it is needed”

Marc Hobell, Head of Public Sector and Utilities, Ordnance Survey

The Challenge

We all rely on power and water and expect prompt delivery with the simple flick of a switch or the easy turn of a tap.

Yet the safe supply of these basic yet crucial commodities is neither simple nor easy. Utility companies are responsible for extensive infrastructure networks that require constant monitoring and maintenance. The care of these critical assets has been made much easier through the use of geographical information systems (GIS), which have revolutionised the world of centralised asset management in the past few years. The next phase is already underway as the accuracy and speed of GIS is taken out into the field by Sigma Seven and Ordnance Survey.

The Solution

Sigma Seven’s GeoField product is a powerful mapping system that enables mobile workers to access enterprise asset and map data at the point of action. It works with existing enterprise GIS and work management systems to ensure that critical job-related data is available in the field. When field workers are equipped with hand-held mobile devices, such as tablet PCs, Ultra-Mobile PCs or laptops, GeoField enables them to quickly and easily locate mapping, operational and infrastructure data. With an intuitive interface, it has comprehensive imaging, redlining and data capture facilities. This provides field staff with all the information they need to complete a job and gives them the ability to return data captured as part of the task.

OS MasterMap® is the most detailed geographic data of Great Britain. It provides intelligent, consistent and up-to-date information at address, street and building level in four data layers: Topography, Address, Imagery and Integrated Transport Network™ (ITN). The OS MasterMap datasets are the fundamental building blocks for any successful geographic system, and Topography Layer provides the base mapping for GeoField’s software solution as supplied to the following customers: Bristol Water, Scottish Water®, ScottishPower®.

The Benefits

By automating map-centric business processes with GeoField and OS MasterMap, these customers dramatically improved the efficiency and effectiveness of their field workers. Front-line staff now have the electronic tools and specialist data to support their day-to-day activities and enabling them to be more effective within a secure and controlled field infrastructure. The result is the elimination of wasteful paper trails, an increase in data quality, a reduction in operational costs and an improvement in customer service and satisfaction.

Our customers have benefitted from:

  • 40% fuel savings on fewer journeys;
  • 1.5 million sheets of A4 saved annually; and
  • 50% more jobs completed per week.

Every GeoField project has more than repaid its original investment by increasing performance, compliance and customer satisfaction. Further savings have followed from the reduction in errors and avoidance of risk, legal and regulatory costs.

In fact, studies with customers have shown that the additional annual savings in fuel, paper, postage and administrative costs can be even greater than the original planned efficiencies. Investment in mobile mapping and work management allows organisations to extract even greater value from existing investments in Ordnance Survey products and enterprise databases. GeoField extends the reach, usage and effectiveness of corporate data.

Fewer journeys and less paper also mean that GeoField and OS MasterMap users can achieve a measurable reduction in their waste and their carbon footprint.
